We are planning on meeting somewhere other than the Perch once a month to expand our horizons without riding the bike path. May & June will be E.Fork dates to be announced. July & August will be Prairie to Galena Summit and SNRA to Galena Lodge (we can probably talk Erin & Don into staying open for dinner) respectively.

These rides are fun and improve your skills. Come out and ride!

The Redfish Lake to Banner Summit ride is set for September 18.  Mark your calendar!

Cascade – Warm Lake 3 Summit Challenge 2010

General Information:  The community of Cascade would like to invite you to a beautiful Alpine bicycle ride.  The ride will take you into some of the most magnificent scenery the State of Idaho has to offer.  You will climb three very challenging summits:

1. Big Creek Summit from the Cascade side.

2. Warm Lake Summit.

3. Big Creek Summit from the Warm Lake side.

There will be three ride options:1. One Summit 35 miles.2. Two Summits 55 miles.3. Three Summits 65 miles. Three summit riders will get a special award for completing the challenge. There will also be a prize for the fastest male and female rider on the Warm Lake summit climb.

Guest riders will include:1. Greg Randolph 1996 U.S. Olympic Road Cyclist.2. Kristin Armstrong 2008 Olympic Gold medalist and World Champion.3. Remi McManus 2001 U.S National Road Race Champion.

A friend participated this year and this is his review:

This past Saturday I completed the “3 summit ride” out of Cascade along with several other locals and about 500 total riders (mostly from Boise).  In my opinion you should put this on your schedule for next year for the following reasons.

The course (67 plus miles with two shorter distances 55 and 35 miles) out and back is absolutely gorgeous, the pavement the best in Idaho is a new surface (maybe stimulus money) but well spent, the support was amazing with pace vehicles and the ISP holding traffic on Highway 55 both going and coming back into Cascade (you felt like a grand tour rider), food and beverage pit stops about every 10 miles (you could complete the ride with 1 water bottle), a wonderful lunch at the finish (and I’m picky), extremely well organized (you could pick up your packet and number on Saturday morning with no lines), did I say great scenery with mountains, forests, wildflowers, waterfalls, and the headwaters of the South Fork of the Salmon River, and the icing on the cake was no traffic (after we turned off of Highway 55 on to the Warm lake highway I bet we rode 15 miles with only our pace cars in sight).

And for all you Mountain Bikers “who would rather crash into a tree than a car” this ride is for you! Hang up your mountain bike for that day and buy, beg, borrow, or rent a road bike for this event (that is if you do not own one), you will love it.

Oh and there is even a “chip timed event” on the 2nd climb for any cyclist that wants to be competitive. And that 2nd climb (Warm lake Summit) is not easy at about a 10% to 11% gradient for about 4 miles, the other 2 climbs of Big Creek Summit over and back is about 5% at most 6% gradient (not hard).

Sturtevant's Monday night rides-taking a break after riding out to Triumph in June

Jim Santa of Sturtevants is hosting ongoing Monday rides.  These are road bike rides and start in Hailey at the Sturtevants store on Main St.  The rides started this spring as a workout for the Sawtooth Century in June and were successful so Jim is continuing the rides.  The ride is for all levels – you can learn to ride in a paceline and ask questions you may have about cycling with a supportive group.  Come enjoy the fun!  Maybe you can train for the Bogus Basin Hill Climb or the Heart of Idaho Century Ride in Idaho Falls, both in August.

for water at the half-way point . (2-hour pace)

Women <18, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60+

Event starts promptly at 9:30am (mass start with separate times for all age groups).

All Packet pick-up Saturday August 29th from 7:30am to 9am at the event start (Highland Elementary School, 3434 Bogus Basin Rd).

Field will be limited to 500 participants.

Entry includes T-shirt and post-ride refreshments

No prizes awarded. Only bragging rights.

The course: a 14.5 mile ascent up Bogus Basin Rd finishing just before entering Bogus Basin Resort. (approximately 3500 feet elevation gain)

All participants must be able to complete the ride within 4 hours for touring class and 3 hours for competitive class. No guarantee of a time or refreshments after 12:30pm

All participants are responsible for returning timing chips to Spondoro, or you will be charged a fee (approx $150).

The HeART of Idaho Century Ride is scheduled for Saturday, August 21, 2010, in Idaho Falls. Bicycle through lush farmland, Grand Teton views and vibrant desert landscapes with fully stocked rest stops and ride support. The ride starts and ends at Snake River Landing where riders will celebrate at a post-ride barbecue with live music, a beer garden, massage therapists and prize drawings.

• $40 ~ 25 mile ride
• $65 ~ 62 & 100 mile rides
• $100 ~ 25 mile Family Package for 2 adults and 2 children
  ($25 each additional child)

The race was led and won by Remi McManus of Team Exergy.

Team Exergy were a strong presence Sunday

The afternoon of racing included contests for young riders and a Competitive Pool (Men 3, Women 1-2-3 and Master Men) and the Development Pool (Men 4-5, Master Group B and Juniors).

We need some more criterium races in Hailey so the local riders can get more experience.  Thanks to Blaine County Rec District and Powerhouse/Road & Dirt for putting on the races.
